Neighborhood

Telegraph Hill is one of the original “Seven Hills. The hill owes its name to a semaphore a windmill-like structure erected in September 1849, to signal the nature of the ships entering the Golden Gate. Telegraph Hill is primarily a residential area, much quieter than adjoining North Beach with its bustling cafés and nightlife. This eclectic community feels like a small town in the midst of a big city. One of the oldest community organizations, Telegraph Hill Dwellers has worked hard for more than 60 years to make Telegraph Hill a better place to live for everyone lucky to live here, but also for people who come from all over the world to see and experience this special place. Coit Tower with 360º views of the city, named after Lillie Hitchcock,  who donated the funds to honor San Francisco’s firefighters, dominates the skyline of the community. She was a wealthy socialite who liked to chase fires in her early days. While steep, the slopes of Telegraph Hill lead to the Financial District, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the waterfront, making this an extremely walkable neighborhood. The Filbert Street Steps, one of the many wooden walkways that criss-cross this community, provide a pathway up the hill from Levi’s Plaza. Climbers can take the steps to Coit Tower, past flowering community gardens, and towering trees colonized by wild parrots.
